I WAS THERE ®

I’d heard and read about the tough and gnarly Cape Buffalo, but until I saw this magnificent animal face to face, I couldn’t grasp its powerful and intimidating impact.

This old Dagga Boy from Sabi Sand looked to have been a loner for many years and had no tolerance for anything or anyone. I was particularly glad to be inside our open aired Land Rover when my husband, Stephen, and I shot our photos of him.

Our PH (Professional Hunter) had warned us when walking in high grass to beware of disturbing a Cape Buffalo because it would be a sudden confrontation that we might not survive. Our PH had experienced such a confrontation with a Cape Buff and lived to tell about it, but only after being chased up a tree, gored numerous times in the legs, and a trip to the hospital emergency room later.    ~NEILL
